Borders divide space: the real as well as the metaphorical one. Their role is to demarcate the differences existing between the others and us; between what is theirs and what is ours, between what is considered normal and what unacceptable. In course of time, borders change. Often, they are a result of a social contract. Arbitrarily established borders thus become a code that needs to be respected. Borders brim with symbols (the East vs. the West, civilization vs. the developing countries) and determine how our identities are perceived (the respectable ones, the fools, the homeless). Borders can protect as well as enclose and imprison. What is behind the border is automatically dangerous for the border itself. Going beyond borders (not just the geographical ones) is symbolic of freedom, openness, of getting to know the new as well as creating it. Transgressing borders often leads to pushing them and thus, gives way to space enlargement and the accepting of what is different. To get rid of borders as such, there would have to be a sharp turn in our way of thinking. Where we live, the borders that are perceived the most intensively are those between the East and the West. There is no wonder that these are often dealt with in film. The life and actions on the borders that bring about limit situations are equally interesting to look at. These, however, arise even when transgressing the rules existing in the society as well as our own physical and psychological borders. Film itself has its limitations: the borders innate to it are of the genre and technical character. To push these borders means to change the very character of cinematography.
